Flower Essences vs. Essential Oils: What's the Difference?

Naturally, many people assume that flower essences and essential oils are the same thing or come from the same place. However, while both come from plants, they are vastly different in how they impact the body. Flower essences are beneficial when the strength of essential oils may be too much. They are especially useful for those worried about allergies.

Essential Oils: Powerful, but Proceed with Caution

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that aim to preserve the natural scent and properties of a plant, including flowers! They’re commonly used for aromatherapy, skincare, and cleaning. However, because they are so highly concentrated and agriculture is not regulated enough, essential oils can sometimes pose issues such as containing toxins, causing irritation and migraines, and sometimes triggering allergic reactions.

In addition, not all essential oils are safe for everyone; children, pregnant women, and pets can be vulnerable.

So, while essential oils can offer incredible benefits, it’s crucial to use them carefully, dilute them properly, and trust that the brand you are using is clean and reliably sourced.

Flower Essences: Nature in Your Pocket

Flower essences are made by infusing the energy or “essence” of flowers into water, typically preserved with a little bit of alcohol. Sometimes the by product of creating essential oils is used to create flower essences. Since they don’t have as strong of a scent, flower essences might be more ideal for those who are sensitive to smells or prone to allergies, providing a safe and gentle alternative for achieving emotional balance without the risk of fragrance overload.

Why Choose One Over the Other?

The main difference between these two remedies is how they affect the body when used. Essential oils affect the body chemically with their potent compounds, which is why they can be so effective but also carry risks. Flower essences work on a subtle energetic level, focusing more on emotional and mental wellness, and have little to no risk of toxicity.

Choose Wisely

Flower essences and essential oils are both lovely aromas with different purposes and potency levels. Those with concerns about allergies, general safety, or sensitivities might enjoy flower essences over essential oils for their more gentle nature. For targeted, physical results through aromatherapy or skincare, essential oils can be highly effective, but always proceed with caution. If you’re looking for the therapeutic effects of aromatherapy, essential oils are more valuable. They are especially useful for enhancing your environment with their natural fragrances.
