Reiki When You're Sick

Reiki When You’re Sick

When you are run down, achy, and not feeling like yourself, the body asks for one thing above all: rest. One of the questions I hear is whether Reiki has a place in those under-the-weather stretches. As a source of comfort and calm, yes, though with two caveats: Reiki is not a treatment, and it is not a replacement for medical care.

First, the important grounding. Reiki is not a treatment for illness, and it is not a substitute for medical care. If you are sick, your doctor, rest, fluids, and time are the real foundation; please always start there. What Reiki can offer is support in those areas that complements care, not in place of it.

So what can it offer when you are unwell? Mostly, it offers ease. Being sick is not only physically draining; it can leave you feeling restless, anxious, frustrated, or simply worn thin. A gentle Reiki session (or even a few quiet minutes of self-Reiki if you are trained) can help invite the body out of that wired, depleted state and into softness. The breath slows, the shoulders drop, and you feel a little more grounded, cared for, and at peace despite the discomfort. For many people, that settled calm is exactly the state in which the body rests most deeply, and rest is where so much of recovery truly happens.

There is also something simply nourishing about being tended to when you feel awful. Safe, caring, unhurried presence reminds the body that it is allowed to let go and be supported, and that comfort has real value.

If you are contagious (a cold, the flu, anything passing around), I would gently ask that we reschedule in-person, hands-on sessions to protect both of us and the other people I see. We can do distance Reiki, or you can do your own self-Reiki at home as lovely alternatives in the meantime. And if you are seriously or acutely ill, please prioritize your medical team first; Reiki can wait, or can come later as part of your recovery once you are on the mend.

When the time is right, Reiki can be a kind companion through illness and the foggy days that follow, not a fix, but a way to feel calmer and more like yourself while your body does its work.

Reaching out to schedule a session is a simple place to start!
