What is Reiki, Really?
A simple explanation of this gentle yet powerful healing art
Reiki is often described as “energy healing,” but what does that actually mean?
Let’s break it down.
The word Reiki comes from Japanese:
“Rei” meaning universal, and
“Ki” meaning life force energy—the vital energy that animates all living things.
So, Reiki is essentially universal life force energy. You can think of it like vitality or the current that keeps everything alive, moving, and balanced.
What Reiki Feels Like
Reiki is a gentle, hands-on (or hands-above) technique that helps the nervous system shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into a state of rest and repair.
It creates a sense of stillness—physically, mentally, and emotionally—so your body can remember how to heal itself. You might think of it as a reset for your whole system.
Clients often describe feeling:
Lighter—like they’ve let go of something they didn’t even know they were carrying
Clearer—mentally and emotionally
More grounded—fully present and centered in their body
Like their body finally exhaled.
A Little History
Reiki originated in Japan in the early 20th century. It was developed by Mikao Usui, who practiced and taught it as a spiritual and healing art. After his death, the teachings were passed down through a few key figures—most notably Chujiro Hayashi and Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to the West in the 1930s and 40s.
Modern Reiki is practiced all over the world, with different lineages and approaches, but the heart of the practice remains the same: offering gentle, intentional energy to support healing and balance on all levels.
Reiki Supports You On Many Levels
Physically – helps ease muscle tension, improves sleep, boosts immune function, and promotes overall relaxation
Mentally – quiets the mind, reduces anxiety, and creates a sense of clarity
Emotionally & Spiritually – helps you release what no longer serves you, reconnect to yourself, and feel more aligned
